Keepers of Place

France is not simply a place to see.

It is a way of living, carried forward by the people who call it home — and our journeys are built around them, with time to know a place more deeply.

Intimate journeys · France, season by season

Strategy note Current site: destinations, tours, itineraries, planning and blog compete for equal attention. Proposed: one emotional narrative, a single primary offer, and one next step — a conversation.
L'art de vivre

A place lives
through its people.

Cultures do not preserve themselves. They are carried forward by ordinary people — the baker who wakes before dawn, the winemaker tending vines planted generations ago, the chef keeping family recipes alive, the market vendor who knows every producer by name.

We call them the Keepers of Place. They are not attractions. They are teachers, stewards and hosts — the living expression of a region. Every French Detours journey is designed around them.

“We don't learn these values by checking off landmarks. We learn them from the people who live them every day.”

The Burgundy Signature Journey

A week among vines, cellars, kitchens and market stalls in the Côte d'Or and the Hautes-Côtes. You will spend three unhurried hours at a family domaine rather than five appointments — long lunches, mustard milled the old way in Beaune, and conversations that continue after the plates are cleared.

Strategy note Self-guided itineraries and product are deliberately absent. One lead journey carries the section; supporting experiences never compete with it for attention.

We don't promise transformation. We create the conditions in which it can naturally emerge.

The French Detours Craft

Five ways a place
reveals itself.

Together they create the conditions for émerveillement — the wonder of meeting France with fresh eyes.

01
Connection to place

Terroir

Where am I?
Land, climate, history and habit conspire to make one village unlike the next a few miles away. We travel to understand why places become what they are — not to collect them.

02
Connection to craft

Savoir-faire

How is this place expressed?
The wisdom, patience and care that come from giving yourself to a craft over time. Not to buy something handmade — to understand the hands, and the generations, behind it.

03
Connection to discovery

Curiosité

How do I experience it fully?
Looking more closely, asking the next question, letting plans unfold. Not to see more — to experience more deeply, with room left for what nobody planned.

04
Connection to care

L'accueil

How am I welcomed?
The quiet art of noticing what someone needs before they realise they need it. Not to feel like a guest — to feel welcomed into a place.

05
Connection to others

La convivialité

Who do I become connected to?
No icebreakers, no manufactured moments — only shared meals, conversation and laughter. Not simply to travel together, but to return home carrying one another's stories.

A personal way
into France.

“People often ask what makes France so special. They expect me to talk about the food, the vineyards, the villages. Something else keeps drawing me back.”

It is the way people have chosen to live in these places — the values they preserve, the traditions they carry forward, the intention behind ordinary days. I find myself becoming a slightly different version of myself there: more patient, more present, more attuned to the moment.

So I build journeys around people rather than sights. I meet every host, winemaker, cook and guide before I ever introduce them to you. I would rather we spend three hours at one family domaine than pass through five. And I travel with you — holding the details, watching the group's energy, adjusting the day when the day asks for it.

How I choose
Every partner met in person, first.
How I host
Depth over volume, presence over pace.
How we begin
A conversation, before anything else.
The guest journey

Care begins long before the flight.

From the first conversation to the note that arrives months after you return, the journey is held by one person who knows your name, your pace and what you came for.

The last mill in Beaune that still turns stone

Seeds arrive brown and leave the mill the colour of wet sand. The miller explains why heat is the enemy, why the stone is slower on purpose, and why a jar bought here tastes of this year and not last.

Why a printed cloth still tells you where you are

The patterns travelled from India, were copied in Marseille, banned, smuggled, and finally became so local that no one remembers them as foreign. A short history of how a region absorbs what it loves.
